Abstrak

Contemporary literature provides an important space for representing women's experiences, gender inequality, patriarchal power, and changing concepts of female identity. Feminist literary criticism enables researchers to examine how literary narratives reproduce, question, or challenge gender ideology and how women negotiate power within social structures. This study aims to analyze the representation of women in selected contemporary literary works, focusing on patriarchal oppression, gender stereotypes, women's resistance and agency, female identity, empowerment, and feminist ideological meanings. This study employs a qualitative descriptive design using feminist literary criticism. Data consist of selected textual passages, including dialogue, narration, characterization, character actions, and representations of gender relations. Data are collected through repeated reading, identification, coding, categorization, and interpretation using feminist analytical categories. An intersectional perspective is applied where relevant to examine the interaction between gender and other social identities. The analysis indicates that contemporary literary works represent women through tensions between patriarchal expectations and personal autonomy. Women experience oppression through family, marriage, cultural norms, economic dependence, and institutional structures, while also demonstrating resistance through independent decision-making, education, careers, rejection of restrictive roles, and identity construction. Contemporary literature can challenge patriarchal ideology while simultaneously reproducing certain gender stereotypes, creating complex representations of women's agency and empowerment.
